The ethereal, Nigerian neo-soul artist, Tems, has graced this world with another powerful project. Love Is A Kingdom is only twenty minutes but it is filled with heart, soul, and vibes. In terms of style, the project is catchy, cohesive, and quintessential Tems. The songs have a heavy Afrobeat influence that is entrancingly combined with Tems silky RnB vocals. There is a balance of songs with a fast-tempo and hard-hitting beats as well as slower-paced, soulful tracks. It feels like any one of these seven songs could have appeared on her previous album Born in the Wild. Within the entirety of the project, there is not a single song I feel compelled to skip. Tems explores themes of love, intimacy, and navigating complicated relationships. She nods to her Nigerian roots with a song titled “Lagos Love.” Overall, my top track from the project is the infectious “I’m Not Sure.” Yet, I have a hard time narrowing it down as I genuinely enjoy each song. I think they all have a purpose within this project, even the more humorous songs like “Big Daddy.” This surprise project drop marks the entry of another captivating and enchanting piece of work into Tems discography.
