Contemporary R&B singer Mariah the Scientist has had quite the year both musically and publicly. Her relationship with the rapper Young Thug has gained online attention mostly due to the drama that has unfolded over the years. Rumors of cheating, pregnancy, and breakups have fueled the publicity. Yet, Mariah has not let this prevent her from working on her music and growing her career. With two songs on the Billboard top ten, two project features, one collaboration, one brand new album, and a subsequent tour this has been an exciting year for Mariah The Scientist and fans of her music.
“Burning Blue,” was a viral hit that gained notoriety particularly on TikTok. It is a slow, soppy love song which is on brand with Mariah’s past hits. The song is possibly exemplary of her relationship with Young Thug and overcoming any public judgement or pressure on their relationship. In the chorus she sings,
I’ll forget (Forget) what everyone said
I’m all in
I couldn’t care less as long as you’re
The song paints a relationship where she is able to overcome outside forces and reunite with her lover.
“Is It a Crime,” is another R&B love hit with fellow lover girl, songstress Kali Uchis. This was a single for Mariah’s album that would be released less than a month later, Hearts Sold Separately. Similar to the themes of “Burning Blue,” Mariah the Scientist discusses receiving negativity and hate towards her relationship. These juxtapose her own feelings and confessions of love, appreciation, and compassion. The song’s title likely makes another nod to her relationship with Young Thug. Their relationship hit the public limelight when a phone call leaked during Young Thug’s prison sentence. This phone call painted Mariah as a loyal and loving partner in the eyes of the public. Cheating rumors involving Young Thug and prison staff would create cracks in this image of their solid foundation.
In the fall, Mariah the Scientist would appear on the projects of two peers. Both of these songs are infectious and songs that I would highly recommend. “my man…” is a collaboration that appears on Queen Naija’s EP, 30. Both of these artists combine their dreamy voices for a cute, catchy track. “Robbed You,” was the second song on Summer Walker longly awaited third album, Finally Over It. Unlike the common themes of the previous songs, “Robbed You” may sound soft but the lyrics are anything but lovey dovey. The song is about violent revenge and putting action behind being played with.
If you have not checked out all of these songs or Mariah the Scientist’s new album, I would recommend it. Especially, if you have ever heard “Burning Blue,” and found yourself gravitating towards listening to it. Or, if you are a fan of contemporary R&B artists like SZA, Kali Uchis, Summer Walker, or Jhené Aiko, you may like Mariah the Scientist. 2025 has been a year full of accomplishments for Mariah the Scientist and her music career. Hopefully, this year will help be a catalyst for Mariah’s growth and prosperity.
